We are so proud of your efforts during a very challenging quarter. You have been already working to learn with COVID-19 and then overcoming hurdles created by the Holiday Farm fire. You have continued to show us how much you value education.
We want to remind you the end of the quarter is now December 3.
As a district, we are offering middle and high school parents two options during the first and second quarters. You can choose to have your child receive a letter grade or opt for a pass no pass option. We believe that offering multiple options may alleviate some of the stress students and families face while navigating distance learning.
Parents of middle and high school students should call the high school office 541-822-3313 or email hsoffice@mckenziesd.org and share which option youโve chosen for your student.
The deadline to share your choice is Tuesday, December 1st.
The district is working hard to find additional options for students to access staffed support for their Comprehensive Distance Learning classes. We hope to have some good news in the coming weeks.
Your physical and mental health is our top priority, and we will continue to look for ways to make sure this school year remains a positive experience for you and your family.

Hi Eagles!
Hereโs a message from Mr. Tompkins and a good reminder of safe practices as we head into the two-week statewide freeze implemented by Governor Brown.
The mandate states that indoor and outdoor social get-togethers are limited to six people, total, from no more than two households.
Please do your part so we can get together again soon.

Hello McKenzie River Community School Families,
After much discussion, the McKenzie School Board voted to add additional days to the school year and shift the calendar. The move is meant to maximize the learning time disrupted by fall wildfires.
The Holiday Farm Fire devastated our community and caused students to miss valuable distance learning time. The School Board voted to add six school days to the year, all of the new days landing on Fridays. They also adjusted the quarters because of the additional days.
The first quarter will end on December 3, the second quarter on February 11, and the third quarter on April 22. The last day of school will be June 17. Graduation will not be affected and will remain on June 12.
Distance learning has been challenging for all of us. We thank you for your continued support and flexibility as we work to make sure your children are getting all of the necessary instruction they need to be successful this year.
We have attached a picture of our new schedule so your family can keep track of the changes.

Hello McKenzie River Community School Families,
We wanted to alert you to a likely change in our school calendar. The Holiday Farm Fire has devastated our community and thatโs why the McKenzie School District Board of Directors will vote on a revised schedule tomorrow.
Each proposed option will add back at least six instructional days and shift the end of the quarters accordingly. The first quarter will now end on December 3 instead of November 5.
The second quarter would end February 11 instead of January 28.
The third quarter would end on April 22 instead of April 8.
The end of the school year is a significant difference between the proposals. One would maintain the current end of the year, June 17. The other would add another week to the end of the year and close the year on June 24. Graduation would not be affected and remains scheduled for June 12.
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we try to navigate during COVID and the Holiday Farm Fire. The education of your students remains our top priority.
The Board will hold a Special Meeting this Thursday at 5:30 pm. You can find the agenda here: www.mckenziesd.org/o/mckenzie-school-district/page/district-board-upcoming-agenda

Congratulations to Elaine Bryson, who was appointed to the McKenzie School Board. We are so lucky to have her advocating for our students.
Bryson was a past district employee and served as the Director of Programs/Grant Writer. She has been a member of this community for more than 25 years. As a parent of a McKenzie School District graduate, she says she feels she will be able to support the Board, Administration, staff, and our community during this unprecedented difficult time.

The time for tomorrow's opportunity to meet with the teaching staff at Guy Lee Elementary is 2-3:30 pm. Sorry for any confusion. The address is: 755 Harlow Rd, Springfield, OR 97477. We look forward to seeing you there!

Hello McKenzie Families, Well done last week kicking off the 2020-2021 school year! Although it looks much different that what we are used to, we did it! When staff went up river, it was great to see familiar faces and check in on the families we have had little to no contact with. It was also an opportunity to see first hand the state of the school and the community. It was a hard but rewarding day, thank you to all who were able to make it out.
This is a friendly reminder that teaching staff will be at Guy Lee Elementary tomorrow, Tuesday, October 6, 2020 from 2-2:30 PM to meet with families that are currently in "town"(Eugene/Springfield/surrounding areas), on the down river side of the closure or that have not had a chance to meet with teaching staff yet. We look forward to seeing you there! #mckenziestrong

Hello McKenzie Families,
We know this first week has had some bumps, you have once again shown your grit and resilience. Well done.
This is a friendly reminder that teaching staff will be up river at the McKenzie Bridge Christian Church tomorrow, Friday, October 2, 2020. Staff will be available to meet from noon until at least 1:30 PM. A light lunch will be provided by Project Hope starting at noon.
For our McKenzie Families currently in Springfield/Eugene or on the down river side of the pilot car area, stay tuned, there will be an opportunity for you to meet with teaching staff as well.

Many of our Eagle flock have been forced from their nests due to the Holiday Farm Fire. If you need support during this time check www.lanecounty.org/mckenziefire. "From the day Cedric was born I knew he was a very special guy. Speaking the Dutch language with him for the first two years of his life was so much fun. To this day, Cedric still has the accent, tongue, and technique, necessary to pronounce those guttural Dutch Gโs.
As a musician, and as a father, I saw Cedric as a fun kid playing with a keyboard and other music toys growing into a young man with a passion for classical music, absorbing everything from the intricate scales, the tempo, and rhythm changes, to get to know the background of those composers, whoโs talent and inspiration are capable to produce some of the most beautiful sonataโs or etudes available.
Cedric spends so much time in his room behind his computer on his clarinet until he gets it right. Hour after hour of practice will it take until he feels he is worthy of playing the piece for us and others. With the help of his music teacher(s), Cedric is on his way to go study under one of the world's leading clarinetists at the University of Oregon this fall.
I have no doubt Cedric will climb to the highest level of what he would like to achieve, for his ambition reaches further and beyond what he currently is capable of. I canโt wait until the day I see him perform on the grand stage and I will be so proud of him, as I am of him now. Congratulations Cedric!"

Participation in this is voluntary but if you would like to receive updates on class activities and ways you can help our students, please provide your email address and phone number for text messages. Also, if there are ways you would like to help, or if you have any questions about COrE or our other projects, please contact them at core@mckenziesd.org. COrE meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm in the HS Meeting Room.

A message from Lane Educational Service District:
Driver Education is an essential part of road safety. Unfortunately, driver education is no longer taught in Oregon high schools. We are trying to change this by offering teen classes (provided by private driving schools) in your district. These classes would take place after school, at the high school.
Will you fill out this short survey to help us find out how much interest there is in your district?

As many of you may know we had to evacuate campus today due to a bomb threat. During this evacuation all students and staff were safe and accounted for. Students and staff alike did a wonderful job of adhering to our evacuation procedures and protocol. Local law enforcement and partners have determined that the campus is safe and we plan to be in session tomorrow Tuesday December 18th. Naturally, there are a lot of conversations happening at home tonight with your students about today's events. The younger students may not know the specifics of the threat. Many of the older students however, may be aware of the nature of the threat. We will have a Care Room open tomorrow for student and staff use; a counselor will be available. Typically we would like to send communication home with students after an incident but due to limited access to buildings, we were unable to do so. Thank you for your patience, understanding and support.
If you have any further questions feel free to contact the Elementary at (541)822-3315 or High School at (541)822-3313.
We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at our regular time.

All activities canceled for the remainder of the day. All students and staff are safe and accounted for and are on their way home if they were not already picked up. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding today!
